There are many types of massage therapy, from classics like Swedish and Deep Tissue, to lesser know styles like Reiki. Whether you'd like to branch out a bit or have a health condition or injury, choosing a style of massage can be confusing if you're not quite sure what it involves. Here is a list of the most popular types of massage at First Things First Wellness Centre.


Swedish/ Relaxation Massage 

A general relaxation massage using lighter pressure to soothe the muscles and ease tension in the body and mind. Kneading and gliding techniques are used on the more superficial layers of muscles. A great choice if suffering from low energy, anxiety or depression. 

Remedial/ Deep Tissue Massage
A firmer massage to address a specific muscle issue. It releases muscle spasms and adhesions by working deeply and precisely on specific muscle groups. It is very effective in treating acute and chronic injuries, back and neck pain, repetitive stress injuries such as tennis elbow or carpal tunnel syndrome and can be helpful in reducing the symptoms of osteoarthritis.


Sports Massage

A form of bodywork geared toward sports people and athletes. It is used to help prevent injuries, to prepare the body for physical activity and to help recover from workouts and injuries. Add Magnesium oil to your massage for an extra $10 for additional muscle relaxing effects. 


Pregnancy Massage

Hot Stone Massage 

Smooth heated basalt rocks are placed on specific points on the body and moved over the muscles. The warmth penetrates the tissue, increasing circulation and easing tension. The stones have a relaxing effect on the body and mind for stress relief.


An ancient Chinese therapy in which a cup is applied to the skin and the pressure in the cup is reduced (either by heat or suction) in order to draw the skin, tissue and muscle upwards. The cups can be left in place on one area or moved around. A common area to be cupped is the back, although cups work well on other areas, too — particularly on fleshy sections of the body. 


The practice of using aromatic plant oils combined with relaxation massage. Essential Oils are selected to address specific needs, to relax, energise, or uplift. Lavender and rose, for instance, are known to promote relaxation. Trigger Point Therapy

A massage technique that involves the application of direct pressure to specified points on tender muscle tissue in order to relieve pain and dysfunction. 


Myofascial Release

A manipulative massage technique that releases tension in the fascia due to trauma, posture, or inflammation. Connective tissues called fascia surround the muscles, bones, nerves, and organs of the body.


Lymphatic Drainage
A gentle rhythmic form of massage that stimulates the circulation of lymph fluid. Stimulates lymph vessels and nodes to boost the immune system and eliminate toxins and excess fluids from the body.


Focuses on points on the hands and feet that correspond to each organ, gland and structure of the body. The therapist manipulates reflex points to reduce tension, improve blood supply and establish harmony among body functions.



A healing technique based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the patient by means of touch, to activate the natural healing processes of the patient's body and restore physical and emotional well-being.
