Say What? Beauty Therapist & Motorsport Driver!

Written by Emma Tommasini

During the working week you will find our Beauty Therapist Maddy in the calm atmosphere of The Beauty & Body Bar. Here she helps her clients feel confident and their best with Beautiful Lashes, Brow Shaping, Indulgent Facials and Special Occasion Make-up & Tanning. In contrast, her other passion in life is racing at adrenaline pumping speeds as a Motorsport Driver in events around Australia!

You may have seen Maddy's face around lately in the lead up to the Townsville 500. She featured on the front page of the Townsville Bulletin, made an appearance on the Today Show and was named as one of the top 30 most influential people under 30 in the region. Despite the attention Maddy has maintained her easy going and level headed attitude going into her 5th Townsville 500 competing in the Toyota 86 Series.

In an industry traditionally dominated by men, Maddy is one of a growing number of Australian women chasing dreams of a career in motor racing. She was one of only two registered female drivers to compete over the three-day event in Townsville. Her first race didn't go to plan hitting another car head on and injuring her elbow. She made a brave come back in her 2nd race starting in 33rd position and finished 23rd. Her last race ended strong in 26th position.

Maddy is always grateful to be able to race in Townsville, her home town were she was born and raised. Maddy said of the action packed weekend  'The weather was amazing and the atmosphere was so good! Was also great to see my fans, friends and family all come along and cheer me on! Thank you to all my sponsors and the team for making this happen once again."

Maddy grew up in a motorsport family, following in the footsteps of her father and grandfather, making her a third-generation racing driver. She was only 7 years old when she took the wheel herself after receiving her first Go-Kart as a birthday present. She instantly fell in love with the excitement and strength of the racing experience. Maddy raced karting for around nine years winning many regional and state titles to be considered one of the leading female karting drivers in Australia.

How does Maddy's mum cope with her hurtling around the track at high speed? Maddy's says "Poor Mum wanted a ballerina! I remember going to ballet classes, but it wasn’t for me. Mum tells me not to go too fast and to stay safe on the track!"

Maddy was 16 years old when, with the support of her dad, the decision was made to step up onto the national stage as a racing car driver. The Aussie Race Car Series was a natural progression with her debut in Phillip Island in 2016.

The adrenaline of reaching speeds of up to 200km/hr is just part of the amazing feeling that Maddy gets from racing. It’s the full experience from the moment she puts that visor down and pushes herself to the limits on the track. Unfortunately finding those limits can sometimes be pretty costly, physically, emotionally and financially.

In only her second race, and on her 17th birthday, Maddy crashed out and into another car in Darwin, knocking herself out while doing 150km/hr going around a corner. Although still marking this as one of the scariest moments in racing, she didn't let it curb her enthusiasm.

After 2 seasons in the Aussie Race Car Series, 2018 was a big year of achievement for Maddy. She earned the title of ARC Ladies Class Champion, was crowned CAMS female driver of the year and levelled up with her debut in the Toyota 86 series.

Being a professional motorsport driver takes commitment and sacrifice. The body must be race fit and the mind sharp. Maddy follows an intensive training regime of cardio fitness & core strength development. She also practices with a high tech simulator to improve reaction time.

Maddy and her team dedicate themselves to gaining & promoting sponsorships so she can continue to peruse her racing ambitions. Find out more about sponsored partnerships on the following link Madison Dunston | Motorsport Athlete | Home
